Three operators, three product handoffs
This is not a network-speed, price or coverage ranking. The rows name the specific tourist product route checked on October 15, 2026. A data-only option from the same carrier is not interchangeable with its voice/SMS option. Where a carrier has not documented acceptance by a named app, the answer remains unknown.
| Exact route | What the operator says to do | Code boundary |
|---|---|---|
| LG U+ Data + Voice eSIM | Complete the Data + Voice purchase/airport-pickup path. LG U+ says to present a passport at its airport counter for verification and receive the QR code. Its notice says the eSIM number appears in phone settings after arrival in Korea. | LG U+ says this voice/SMS service supports restaurant and taxi-app SMS verification, but not banking or government identity verification. Its Data Only eSIM does not support SMS verification, and cannot later be topped up for voice. LG U+ product and FAQ; installation guide. |
| SKT 5G eSIM Voice ∙ Text | Buy the listed Voice ∙ Text SKU online and receive its QR voucher by email. Use data in Korea, then verify the passport after immigration to enable ordinary incoming calls and texts. The voucher describes online verification during SKT's stated 08:00–22:00 Korea-time window or an airport counter with the physical passport outside it. Outgoing calls/texts need a separate top-up. | SKT explicitly says messages for personal-authentication services and payments cannot be received. Its public product text does not establish that a particular restaurant or taxi app will accept this tourist number. The separate DATA ONLY SKU has no voice/text upgrade path. SKT Voice ∙ Text product; SKT DATA ONLY product. |
| KT DATA / CALL / SMS tourist eSIM | KT's English tourist product text distinguishes this path from Data Only. For the outgoing-call/text prepaid eSIM it directs customers to purchase on site at an airport KT Roaming Center. Voice/SMS becomes available only after KT's identity/entry check. KT says its mobile numbers use the 010 prefix. | KT says the tourist eSIM does not support personal authentication. The public text checked here does not confirm that your named restaurant or taxi app will accept an SMS code. KT says its Data Only route can be bought online or on site but cannot be topped up for voice later. KT tourist eSIM product. |
Source boundary: the KT product page was also rendered in the in-app browser on October 15. It shows both product columns and, unusually, conflicting 30-day and 90-day installation notices. We therefore state no installation deadline. We did not complete a checkout or verify live stock, final price or app acceptance.
Turn “I need a number” into one verifiable question
A public traveler question asks for both data and a Korean number and notes that many listings only mention data. Replies describe different SKT and LG U+ experiences, including airport and online verification. Those accounts are individual experiences, not current operator terms; the official product routes above control our fact statements.
Before checkout, write the exact name of the restaurant, taxi, delivery or event app, and the exact action: supply a contact number, receive an ordinary arrival message, receive an SMS code, or pass a formal identity check. Ask the app which number type and verification route it accepts for a short-stay visitor. Separately ask the operator whether your exact tourist SKU can receive that class of message after its required identity step. Save both answers with the SKU URL and date. A reply about ordinary incoming texts is not an answer about an app's identity-verification service.
Do not buy a number merely because a travel post says every queue requires one. The Korea Tourism Organization's Catchtable Global guide documents Google/Apple sign-up without a Korean number for that version; other on-site kiosks or named services may differ. If the app has a no-number path, use that path first. If it truly requires a tourist number, proceed only when its acceptance and the exact carrier entitlement are clear.
Use a four-cell arrival proof card
This is a procedure for the traveler, not a claim that our team has completed it. Put the product name, purchase URL, passport-step evidence and support contact in one note before departure. Keep a working data or offline route to your accommodation while the number task is unresolved.
- Handoff: record whether you received an emailed QR, an airport-counter QR, or another documented delivery. Save the voucher and installation instructions; do not delete an installed one-time profile to troubleshoot casually.
- Identity: after entry, complete the route required by that exact SKU and record the time and confirmation. A working data page before identity verification does not prove voice or SMS is enabled.
- Ordinary service: check the assigned number and, if the plan permits it, arrange an ordinary incoming text or call. Record received versus not received. This tests only that function, not the next one.
- Named app: request one real code from the specific app you need and record whether the code arrived and whether the app accepted it. If the app rejects the number, do not label the eSIM broken without distinguishing carrier delivery from app policy; ask both parties and use your fallback.
Mark each cell pass, fail or unknown. A displayed 010 number may satisfy a form field but still fail an app's authentication policy. Conversely, a missing code may reflect the app, the product, or an incomplete passport step. This small record narrows the problem without inventing a cause. Never publish your passport, voucher QR or live verification code in a forum.
Common Korea number questions
Does a Korean eSIM phone number guarantee an app verification code?
No. A displayed number, ordinary incoming SMS, and acceptance by a named app are separate checks. LG U+ says its Data + Voice tourist product supports restaurant and taxi-app SMS verification but not banking or government identity verification. SKT and KT exclude certain personal-authentication uses; ask the exact app and carrier about your task.
Can I buy the SKT Voice and Text eSIM online and use calls immediately?
SKT's listed Voice and Text eSIM sends a QR voucher by email. Data starts in Korea, but ordinary incoming calls and texts require passport verification after entry; outgoing calls and texts require a separate top-up. SKT offers an online passport route during its stated hours or an airport desk outside them.
Can I upgrade a KT or LG U+ data-only tourist eSIM to voice later?
Do not count on that path. KT's official tourist eSIM text says Data Only cannot be topped up for voice; LG U+ says voice top-up is unavailable on its Data Only eSIM. Choose and verify the voice/SMS product before paying if that function matters.
Which of KT, SKT and LG U+ should I buy for a restaurant or taxi code?
There is no tested winner here. LG U+ explicitly claims restaurant and taxi-app SMS verification on Data + Voice. The SKT and KT sources checked here do not establish acceptance by your named restaurant or taxi app. Confirm the exact app, SKU and identity path; keep the result unknown until the provider and app answer or you test it yourself.
Is a tourist eSIM number enough for Korean banking or government identity verification?
Do not assume so. LG U+ excludes banking and government identity verification for its tourist voice/SMS service. SKT says personal-authentication and payment texts cannot be received on the checked product; KT says its tourist eSIM does not support personal authentication. These are supplier rules, not our field tests.
Sources and limits
Current operator pages checked October 15, 2026: LG U+ eSIM product/FAQ and installation guide; SKT Voice ∙ Text and SKT DATA ONLY; KT tourist eSIM products. The public community question and Korea Tourism Organization's Catchtable Global guide were read for the traveler task and its no-number exception.
All operator statements are their current product claims, not Best eSIM Tools testing. We did not buy a plan, submit identity documents, request a live code, time an activation, check checkout totals, or compare signal. The two-party question, four-cell proof card, stop-on-unknown rule and diagram are original editorial methods. For countrywide data-plan selection, see our Korea eSIM travel guide; this page intentionally handles only the deeper number workflow.
